I’m the worst at this!

So…………. it’s been awhile! SORRY!

Here are some of the after shots to give you an idea that we are settled in :)

Finished hallway

this is the hallway – featuring the new fresh paint & light fixture!

Living room to dining room

One side of the living room . . .

Living room

Here is the other side of the living room . . . please note the lovely accent chair! We have no money, ok?

Dining room

And the dining room! Since this picture was taken, we have added some new (used) chairs that we bought online. . . that I will reupholster, eventually.

Please be patient and stay tuned! I am hopeful that we will start on our long list of projects now that it will be cold outside!!

the DURING shots

Terribly sorry for the delay on getting these up – - as some of you may know, we ran a triathlon this weekend! My dad, Alec, our friend Brock & I all completed a “Try a Tri”. We are all “finishers” (that’s what the medals say) – but Brock came 5th.

So, the first thing we tackled (as I have mentioned in previous posts) was the carpet! This is the finished product . . . oh so pretty. In this shot, you can see a bit of the new colour on the walls as well. My brother gave us plenty of tips during the process & one of the most helpful was to paint the stair baseboards before the carpet went in, so that we would just have to touch up & not mess around with the brand new carpet!

new carpet on stairs

Next up, we have another shot from inside the master bedroom – just took it to marvel at the pretty new carpet – you can see all the way to the 2nd bedroom. We took all the closet doors off for painting & to ease the job for the carpet layers (We still have to put those doors back up!!)

master carpet

This is the new dining room colour — with a bunch of stuff in the middle, and with the dated light fixture — thanks go out to Natasha & Dan for putting the second coat on & trimming it out! Oh, and of course for the pizza. . . yum!

new dining room colour

This next one is of Alec, hard at work, painting Scott’s room.  Unfortunately, this room doesn’t have an overhead light which would be problematic for painting accuracy. But fortunately, Sue & Fred lent us this super heavy duty light that was a huge benefit for every job! Scott’s room was painted the same colour as the dining room.

alec hard @ work

The hideous bathroom with some minor changes – the shelving unit is gone & there’s lots of putty in the walls. This room will be painted a light blue & eventually a medicine cabinet w/a mirror will go in place of the current mirror (we’ve purchased it – it just didn’t come with screws. Huge setback.)

powder room

Not much has changed in the living room – but a lot of work went into a new coat of paint everywhere. Thanks so much to Sue for helping Alec paint day in and day out!!

lving room

And last but not least. . . the new appliances! Thank you so much to my brother who was our plumber and installed the lines to the icemaker & dishwasher. In this shot, the fridge isn’t pushed back all the way. So it looks kinda silly to have such brand spankin’ new appliances with such an old kitchen, but I think we’ll manage juuuuust fine.DSC03926And that’s it for the progress shots. . . up next, the after shots!

The BEFORE shots

Here are the pictures I took before we ripped up the carpets & painted nearly everything…
First up, we have the stairs leading to the second level (master bedroom, 2nd bedroom & full bathroom) . . . as you can see there was a lovely stair runner made of plastic & iron rods that we just had to give up.

Stairs leading to the 2nd level

Next up, we have the hallway on the main level which showcases the dark grey colour of the walls and the dated light fixture. The doorway straight ahead leads to the kitchen & out the back door (to the screened in porch) & the doorway to the left leads to the dining room. To the right, there is a set of stairs leading down & one leading up.
Hallway
Next, we have the kitchen, sans appliances & with a big mess! The only thing that will change here is the addition of brand new stainless steel appliances. . . so it’ll be a pretty big change!
Kitchen
Here we have the infamous red dining room which received mixed reviews. Sorry for all of those who loved it, as it is now gone. But this picture serves to display the odd colour choice & the dated light fixture (that matches the hallway one). By the way, anyone want a couple brass light fixtures? Best offer.
Red dining room
The next few pictures illustrate the reason why we decided it was absolutely, positively necessary to replace the carpets (besides the fact that the previous owners had 3 cats & we have 2 cats) . . . the first two shots are of the master bedroom & the last two are from the 3rd bedroom (or Scott’s bedroom).

It’s important to save the best for last. . . this is the 2nd bathroom or powder room. . . it (used to) feature 90′s sponge painting on the walls, a shelving unit fit for a garage, a mirror glued to the wall, and a faux-wood soap dish, light switch panel, and light fixture. . . pretty isn’t it??

Hope you enjoyed the before look of the house. . . soon to come, the AFTER!

We’re in!

So the big day was Saturday . . . and surprise, surprise Rogers didn’t show up to install our cable & internet. So unfortunately I have been unable to update.  Once we get the internet @ home, I will upload pictures of our progress & of the giant mess we have to deal with now! (Giant mess = unpacking)

I will update ASAP, but anyone who wants to drop by and see the place in person, please feel free! (We have cold drinks now!)

More to come. . .

Day 5

So as Alec says we’re a couple hours behind schedule, but things should work themselves out by move-in day!
As of 10pm last night, we finished all of the “demo” of the carpet & old baseboards upstairs, cleaned up all the debris & started painting trim & filling holes.
Alec works all day today so it is up to me after work tonight to finish the trim so that its done before the carpet is installed on Tuesday morning. No big deal!

This weekend wasn’t without its missteps. There was an issue with measuring square footage which we solved by measuring everything & showing up at Home Depot where a lovely girl named Sarah had to calculate all our paint for us. Suuuure. . . calculating square footage seems simple, but apparently not for us @ 8am on a Sunday! But problem solved. We have all of our paint & its time to get cracking!

More to come!

We’re engaged!

I think everyone already knows the story. . . but on the evening of our closing I was pleasantly surprised by a proposal!
After Alec got the call to go pick-up the keys, he picked me up & we headed to the house with a few boxes & cleaning supplies. As I had mentioned before, we were planning on toasting with a bottle of champagne. So I suggested that we head out to the screened-in porch to pop the bottle . . . little did I know that I was leading myself out to the exact area that Alec wanted to go.

I was a bit confused over several things, there was a key already in the lock when I went to open the back door . . . and when I stepped out there, there was a table with a big vase of flowers and rose petals scattered around. At first I thought maybe the homeowners or our real estate agents had left us a welcome home present – but when I asked Alec who had done it, he said it was him. (Turns out our real estate agent let him in early so he could set everything up. . . very sneaky!)
Then Alec got down on one knee and I clued in to what the heck was going on! He got a bit choked up (in a manly way, he says) & I started to tear up as he read a little speech he had prepared.  It was beautiful and amazing. . . and I said yes! (Alec claims that I never said yes, I just hugged him) But I think that’s a yes!
The ring is beautiful, Alec really outdid himself. . . and it fits perfectly too!

I think everyone in Alec’s life already knew that this was happening. . . but only my dad knew on my side, so I think everyone was just as surprised as I was!
Thanks to everyone for all of their wishes, we can’t wait to celebrate with everyone. :)

Closing Day!

Everything went well yesterday. . . we met with the lawyer in the afternoon & signed all the paperwork. It was a relatively painless experience. They told us that we will get a call between noon & 3pm today to come pick up the keys.

Then we went for the final viewing @ 8pm. (There was a cute little note from the current homeowners wishing us happiness.) My parents & Alec’s mom & Fred were all able to join us. It was a great experience to see the house with the group! It was fun to show off the new place & explain all the little things that need to be completed. Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of the empty house, but soon it will be ours & I can take all the pictures that I want!

Today, we plan to get the keys, take our bottle of champagne (courtesy of Rachelle, Greg, Adelle & Simon) & toast to our new house!
But before the fun, I am stuck packing on my day off! (Only a week left before the move!)
Tomorrow… I hope to make some decisions about paint, purchase the paint & begin that grueling task. Who’s free?!

CANCELLED!

Just a quick note to say that unfortunately our viewing was cancelled for tonight as the current homeowners are moving out today.  Looks like we have our sights set on one for tomorrow though…
Stay tuned…

the packing begins

Start your countdowns!
The final viewing has been tentatively scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday) @ 6pm. Unfortunately, this means that Alec’s mom, Sue, and Fred won’t be able to attend! But we get the house soon enough that everyone can stop by & see it anytime!

We’ve also made an appointment with our lawyer for Wednesday @ 3pm to sign the last of the paperwork & hand over a lot of hard earned money. Although we’re not sure when we get the keys…. since we’re newbies at this, we have no idea if there needs to be another appointment scheduled or if we just stop by on the actual closing date… we’re very clueless!

On another note, my mom & I raided Home Depot on Sunday for paint samples which was a lot of fun! But I think I might be a little overwhelmed with this task of decorating. I also picked up a new light fixture for the dining room & Alec approved when he saw it today. I think it will be a lot easier once I see the house again to get a grasp of what needs to be done & to prioritize those tasks. (And of course recruit help!)

Tonight I started to pack up a few things, starting with books & things in the front hall closet. I think I filled 3 small rubbermaid containers & 3 big ones! A little bit at a time!

More to come soon enough!  I’ll try to take pictures tomorrow.
